Coir is made from the rhetted fiber from the coconut husk.The fiber is then twisted into rope or used directly as is in the vibrant coir industry which makes mats.Coir is a preferred material as it does not rot in the open and does not attract mites and insects.
Overview of Techniques involved
1. Sourcing and Transporting raw material and raw material preparation
- Coir
- Various hand tools
2. Design sketching/cardboard templates
- The outline is drawn to understand the shapes involved after which cardboard templets are made and cut to form the basic structure.
3. Coir tyeing and shaping
- The coir is then bunched and wound around this card board and fixed to it using thread.
4. Hand assembling
- The different parts that are seperately finished are attached together.
5. Trimming and finishing
- All the different parts are joined together using nails
6 . Surface ornamentation
- Finally the surface is decorated using colored tapes, threads etc.
