The craft of pottery, clay work is practiced in several states of India where local clay from the river bed is used to make kitchen untensils, storage utensils, clay relief, toys, votive figurines etc. Along the Gangetic delta, clay is of very good quality.
Overview of Techniques involved
1. Sourcing and Transporting raw materials and raw material preparation
- Clay
- Dyes, tools and accessories
3. Pot making on the wheel
- The potter then shapes and makes the product on his wheel.
4. Roof tile making
- The roof tiles are flattened and shaped on the mould by hand.
5. Surface finishing
- The surface is then cleaned out, finished and smoothened.
6. Product finishing
- The products are then fired in a kiln and then the surface is hand painted and decorated if required.
