About the Show:

In the midst of a scorching Chennai summer, it is raining blouses at the ‘Blouse Mela’ at the ‘Kamala’ Crafts shop! And how!! The Mela showcases a dazzle of ‘art and style’ unstitched blouses, each a wonderful symphony crafted by the artisanal hands of India. The matchless craftsmanship and intuitive design sense of the country’s traditional embroiderers, hand block designers and printers, batik and kalamkari artisans, and weavers come together in the various art statements made in each of the blouses on display. Today, when the blouse is often the focus of making a complete saree fashion statement, the ‘Blouse Mela’ offers countless options ranging from classical, dramatic and elegant to trendy, bold and contemporary chic, from colour coordinated to color conflicted and so much more.
Look at the blouse options offered at the ‘Blouse Mela’. Mesmerising lyrical imagery of Kutch embroidered motifs on ajrakh printed material. The poetry of a profusion of kalamkari flowers hand painted on cotton and silk. The wonder of ikat weave patterning on eri silk. Ravishing kantha flowers and stripes on West Bengal handlooms. The drama of batik on West Bengal’s khadi. Delicate shibori on khadi, bandini from Bhuj and Banjara embroidery on mangalagiri and khadi. And underscoring the ‘green’ mood and philosophy, upcycled blouses juxtaposing 2 bits of cloth pieces together in various colours, prints and craft combinations.
Remember, these specially crafted blouses are being seen in Chennai for the first time. The ‘Blouse Mela’ is on at ‘Kamala’ – Crafts Shop of The Crafts Council of India on 11th, 12th and 13th July 2019 10 am-7 pm.
