Chendamangalam Handloom
A new collection of Kerala Saris will be available for Onam at Kamala Chennai.
(starting 3rd September 2019 until stock lasts.) The saris have been made at Chendamangalam with the help of ‘Care for Chendamangalam’ (C4C) team.
Background:
In August 2018, the floods of Kerala ravaged the lives of Keralites in more ways than one. While it created a huge upheaval in the lives of almost all, the handloom weavers of Chendamangalam lost their livelihood. Situated in a small Taluk in Paravoor, Ernakulam District, Chendamangalam is one of the hubs of the weaving community with the GI Tag which consists of 7 Co-Operative Societies. 600 handloom weavers were overnight bereft of their homes, looms and yarn damaged beyond recognition. All they were left with was a sense of helplessness.
The Care for Chendamangalam (C4C) team is committed to one Co-Operative Society HWCS-648 which consists of 42 women weavers and skilling the next Gen. The weavers of HWCS-648 are back to weaving again with inputs from the C4C members. A 3 year road map has been planned to take the products Pan India. The challenge lies ahead to uplift, upscale and uphold this heritage of ours.
